The Roland VG4 Series has arrived. Available in 54-inch and 64-inch formats, the new VG4-540 and VG4-640 bring a refined print engine, next-generation TR3 eco-solvent inks, a 7-inch colour touchscreen with Direct Print, and VersaWorks 7 RIP as standard. This article covers everything you need to know about the new Roland VG4.

Roland VG4 eco-solvent printer cutter series

What is the Roland VG4 Series?

The Roland VG4 is the latest generation of Roland DG’s TrueVis eco-solvent printer/cutter range, replacing the well-respected VG3 series. It combines printing and contour cutting in a single machine and is built for sign makers, vehicle graphics specialists, and wide-format print businesses that need consistent, high-quality output day after day.

The VG4 series is available in two widths to suit different production requirements:

  • Roland VG4-540 — 54-inch eco-solvent printer/cutter, ideal for mid-volume production environments
  • Roland VG4-640 — 64-inch flagship model, designed for high-volume production where maximum throughput matters

Both machines share the same core technology platform: TR3 eco-solvent inks, a refined print head engine delivering up to 1,800 dpi, VersaWorks 7 RIP software, Roland DG Connect cloud monitoring, and a 7-inch colour touchscreen with Direct Print. The take-up unit is included as standard on every VG4.

  • Max print/cut width: 1,346 mm (52.9″)
  • Media width range: 295-1,371 mm
  • Roll weight capacity: up to 35 kg
  • Dimensions W x D x H: 2,632 x 748 x 1,415 mm
  • Machine weight: 182 kg

Roland VG4-640 — 64 Inch

The VG4-640 is the flagship 64-inch model. Built for environments with high throughput demands, it delivers the capacity, colour consistency, and cutting accuracy to run vehicle wrap jobs at scale, stock retail display programmes, and produce continuous banner output at commercial deadlines.

What Sets the Roland VG4 Apart

The VG4 series brings meaningful advances across every key area of print and cut production. Here is a breakdown of the most significant improvements over the previous generation.

TR3 Extended Gamut Inks

TR3 inks go beyond standard CMYK with dedicated Green, Orange, Red and Light Black channels. The result is a substantially wider colour gamut with smoother gradients and more faithful spot colour reproduction than earlier generations.

1,800 dpi Print Resolution

The refined print head engine with ultra-fine droplet control delivers sharper detail, cleaner fine lines, and more consistent tonal reproduction. True Rich Color profiles optimise output from the first print, with no manual colour correction required.

7-Inch Touchscreen with Direct Print

The responsive 7-inch colour touchscreen provides full control over everyday operation plus Direct Print — allowing operators to select and send jobs directly from the panel without returning to the workstation. A real workflow improvement in busy production rooms.

Take-Up Unit Included

Every Roland VG4 ships with the take-up unit already included. Improved in-sync take-up control keeps media tension consistent across long print and cut runs, reducing tracking errors and enabling reliable unattended production.

Perforated Cut

The integrated perforated cut function creates clean, repeatable tear lines between labels and stickers on a roll. Adjustable perforation intervals suit different products and liner weights. No guillotine or manual scoring required.

VersaWorks 7 + DG Connect

VersaWorks 7 and Roland DG Connect are both included at no extra cost with every VG4. VersaWorks 7 handles colour profiling, step-and-repeat, tiling, and print-cut integration. Roland DG Connect gives you cloud-based machine monitoring from your smartphone.

Roland TR3 Eco-Solvent Inks

The Roland VG4 series uses TR3 eco-solvent inks — the most advanced ink system in Roland DG’s TrueVis range. TR3 builds directly on the proven TR2 formulation used in the VG3 series, with improvements to gamut width, colour accuracy, and outdoor durability.

Available TR3 Ink Configurations

The VG4 is available in four ink configurations, specified at time of order:

  • Standard 8-Colour (C, M, Y, K, Light Black, Green, Orange, Red): The broadest available gamut for sign and display production. Recommended for vehicle graphics, retail display, banner, and general commercial print applications.
  • Photo Configuration (C, M, Y, K, Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Orange, Red): Optimised for photographic reproductions, portraiture, fine art prints, and applications where subtle skin tones and tonal gradients are critical.
  • White Ink Configuration (C, M, Y, K, Orange, Red, White x 2): For printing onto transparent, metallised, and dark substrates. White channels are double-loaded for continuous availability on long runs.
  • CMYK: Standard four-colour configuration for straightforward CMYK-only workflows.

TR3 inks are outdoor-durable eco-solvent inks with excellent adhesion across vinyl, canvas, film, and other common substrates. Lamination is not required for many applications, reducing both material costs and production time. Supplied in 500 ml cartridges (White: 220 ml).

VersaWorks 7 and Roland DG Connect

VersaWorks 7 RIP Software

Every Roland VG4 ships with VersaWorks 7 — Roland DG’s most capable RIP software — at no additional cost. VersaWorks 7 includes high-speed processing, True Rich Color profiling, step-and-repeat layouts, tiling, cut path integration, and full Mac and Windows compatibility. It integrates directly with Roland DG Connect for seamless workflow management.

For businesses moving from VersaWorks 6 (supplied with the VG3 series), VersaWorks 7 brings a refined interface, improved colour management tools, and tighter integration with the print-cut workflow on the new VG4 hardware.

Roland DG Connect

Roland DG Connect is a cloud-based monitoring application included with every VG4. It provides real-time visibility of printer status, ink levels, print history, and machine health from any smartphone or tablet. Operators can receive alerts before consumables run out and monitor multiple devices from a single app — a useful tool for businesses running more than one Roland machine, or for managers who need an overview of production without being on the press room floor.

The VG4 series handles the full range of eco-solvent print and cut applications. Here are the main production areas where the VG4 excels.
