Hahnemühle paper questions and answers
Where can I buy Hahnemühle paper in the UK?
RGB UK stocks the Hahnemühle Digital FineArt range in sheets and rolls, including Photo Rag, the Etching papers, the baryta papers and Hahnemühle canvas. Shop Hahnemühle or call 0118 934 4426.
Which Hahnemühle paper is best for photography?
For colour and black and white photography with maximum depth, choose a baryta such as Photo Rag Baryta or FineArt Baryta. For a matt, glare free look, Photo Rag 308 is the classic all rounder.
Which Hahnemühle paper is best for art reproduction?
Textured matt papers such as German Etching, Museum Etching and the William Turner watercolour papers suit paintings and drawings. For canvas reproductions, choose Cézanne, Daguerre or Canvas Artist.
What is the difference between Photo Rag and Photo Rag Bright White?
Both are 100% cotton matt papers. Photo Rag Bright White has a brighter white base for more contrast and punch, while Photo Rag 308 is the softer, more classic white. See our complete paper guide.
Is Hahnemühle paper archival?
Hahnemühle states that its FineArt inkjet papers are acid and lignin free and meet the requirements for age resistance, with a life of over 100 years. How long a print lasts also depends on the ink, so use pigment inks and protect prints that are not behind glass.
Which side of Hahnemühle paper do I print on?
The coated side, which you can usually feel and which looks slightly brighter and more even. Photo Rag Duo and Book and Album are coated on both sides. See our print side guide.
Where do I get Hahnemühle ICC profiles?
Free from the Hahnemühle ICC Download Center. Choose your printer maker, model and paper, and the handling instructions download with it. Our ICC guide covers installation on Mac and Windows.
Should I use photo black or matte black ink?
Matte black on matt papers such as Photo Rag and German Etching, photo black on baryta, satin and pearl papers. See the paper by paper table.
Why are there white specks on my Hahnemühle prints?
Loose coating residue or paper dust on the surface when it printed. Hahnemühle recommends blowing the surface clean before printing. A soft brush or blower along the cut edge of a roll helps.
What core size do Hahnemühle rolls have?
Hahnemühle states that many of its rolls use a 3 inch core as standard. RGB UK stocks most papers in 17, 24, 36 and 44 inch widths, with several also in 60 and 64 inch.
Can I try Hahnemühle papers before buying a full box?
Yes. The Hahnemühle Media Sampler shows every surface, the Printed Sample Book shows them printed, and the Matt FineArt Smooth sample pack gives you sheets to print on.

How do I protect a Hahnemühle print that is not framed behind glass?
Hahnemühle recommends sealing it with Hahnemühle Protective Spray, which adds UV, abrasion and water resistance. For canvas, use Hahnemühle Varnish.
How do I authenticate a limited edition print?
Sign, date and number every print in the edition. Hahnemühle’s Certificate of Authenticity, made on watermarked mould made paper, adds a record for each print and helps deter forgery.
Which printers work best with Hahnemühle paper?
Any professional pigment inkjet printer with a profile for the paper. Canon’s 12 colour imagePROGRAF PRO range, such as the PRO-2600 and PRO-4600, is a popular pairing. See the best large format printers for fine art.
